Promote responsible use of fresh water that is both socially beneficial and environmentally sustainable.

Environmentally sustainable water use maintains or improves biodiversity and ecological processes at the watershed level.

Socially beneficial water use recognizes basic human needs and ensures long-term benefits (including economic benefits) for local people and society at large.

Our Vision
Water users and managers are responsible water stewards, who protect and enhance freshwater resources for people and nature.

Water Stewardship
The AWS is building a global water stewardship system and the long-term organization to house this system.

Once established, it will be implemented regionally, will define water stewardship standards, and will recognize large-scale water users and managers who meet the standards through a branded certification program.
